Stephen Schrettl is the Professor for Functional Materials for Food Packaging at the School of Life Sciences at the Technical University of Munich. Before he left the Adolphe Merkle Institute in 2022, he was a Group Leader in the Polymer Chemistry and Materials group.

Stephen studied Chemistry at Freie Universität Berlin (Germany). He received his PhD in Materials Science from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) in 2014, working with Prof. Holger Frauenrath on the synthesis of reactive oligoyne molecules, the investigation of organic reactions in single crystals, and the development of a wet-chemical approach for the preparation of carbon nanosheets from oligoyne carboxylates. He then performed postdoctoral research first at EPFL, and then with Prof. Christoph Weder at AMI.

He is interested in the structure-property relationships of supramolecular polymers and the use of different types of non-covalent binding motifs for the preparation of stimuli-responsive polymers. In this context, aspects of chemical synthesis, polymer chemistry, and self-assembly methods are combined to control the structure and function in different classes of polymeric materials.
