Plastic Micro- and Nanoparticles

Preparation and characterization of micro- and nano-sized plastic particles for human hazard assessments.

Plastic degradation in the environment results in the formation of plastic microparticles and, upon further degradation, plastic nanoparticles. Only limited data is available regarding the impact of these plastic micro- and nanoparticles on human health; despite increasing evidence of their transfer to humans via the food chain. This project investigates the production and characterization of plastic micro- and nanoparticles made from materials commonly used in the packaging industry. These particles are subsequently used as test materials for further in-vitro studies to determine the potential effects of plastic micro- and nanoparticles on human health.
