The Adolphe Merkle Institute (AMI) at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland invites applications for a PhD position in the Soft Matter Physics group of Prof. Ullrich Steiner, jointly supervised by Dr. Xiao Hua.

PhD Position in Li-ion Battery Materials

The goal of the project is to deliver nanostructured electrode materials with high performance in rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. The project involves synthesis and processing of oxide-based materials with an emphasis on the scalability of the synthesis route and well-defined morphologies of the materials. Comprehensive characterizations will be performed to correlate the morphological and structural properties of the materials with their electrochemical behaviors, and reciprocally, to use this knowledge to improve the material preparation methods.

The successful applicant will hold a Master’s degree, or equivalent, in Physical Science or Material Science & Engineering.  Experience in one or more of the following fields will be preferable: lithium-ion battery, polymer self-assembly, inorganic material synthesis, and electrochemistry. The candidate should have enthusiasm for practical laboratory work, and wish to pursue independent research involving chemical synthesis and routine characterization techniques. The candidate should also have excellent communication skills in English (both written and oral). Close collaboration with other members of AMI, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Fribourg, and local and international companies is desirable.

The Adolphe Merkle Institute at the University of Fribourg is a recently established center of competence, focused on research in the field of soft nano-materials, science and technology. With the objective to stimulate innovation, AMI aims to combine fundamental and application-oriented research within an interdisciplinary setting. AMI offers highly competitive working conditions, an outstanding infrastructure and a competitive salary.

Please email your application to (turn on JavaScript) including your CV, a cover letter, and contact information of (at least) two references. Review of applications will begin immediately upon receipt of complete application materials. The call remains open until a fitting candidate has been selected.
