Dimitri was born in Brugge, Belgium, and received his Master's degree in biology in 2001 from the University of Gent. He moved to Bern, Switzerland, for a PhD in structural biology which focused on applications in cryo-electron microscopy of motile mammalian cells. After a 2-year stay in the lab of Prof. Matthias Ochs investigating the cellular biology of surfactant exocytosis in the human lung by 3D microscopy, Dimitri moved to the molecular structural biology group of Prof. Wolfgang Baumeister at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich, Germany, in 2009.

In the BioNanomaterials group, he is responsible for microscopy and imaging.
