Fabian Herzog grew up in Embrach and Frauenfeld, Switzerland. After finishing school in 2001 and completing Swiss military service and an internship in England, he enrolled at ETH Zurich in Biology with a Major in Biochemistry. After obtaining an MSc in Biology in 2008, he continued to work at ETH as a scientific assistant. He focused on how viruses, especially SV40, overcome host cell membranes. In April 2010 he started his PhD thesis in Bern in the Group of Prof. Peter Gehr under the supervision of Barbara Rothen-Rutishauser.
At AMI, Fabian is part of the BioNanomaterials group of Prof. Barbara Rothen-Rutishauser and Prof. Alke Fink. He is investigating the effects of silver nanoparticles on the human epithelial airway barrier. By using a specifically developed exposure system, he is assessing the risk of silver nanoparticle exposures at the air-liquid interface under realistic exposure scenarios.
